Comparison

Gardenigloo vs Domevora: Garden Igloo Compared on Price, Size and Winter Use

A Gardenigloo is a 3.58 m geodesic frame — PVC on the V2, powder-coated aluminium on the V3 Pro — with a soft transparent PVC cover. Gardenigloo USA lists it at $1,149 (V2) and $1,499 (V3 Pro). A Domevora dome has no frame: curved solid polycarbonate panels are bolted to an aluminium base ring. The nearest size, the Round 3.5 m High, starts at US$1,692 EX-WORKS. Gardenigloo is lighter, cheaper and goes up without tools; Domevora is heavier, taller and built to stay up as a room.

The real difference

A soft cover on a frame, or a shell that is the structure.

Both are clear domes you can sit in, and both get called a garden igloo. They are built differently. On a Gardenigloo the frame carries the load and the PVC cover keeps the weather out, so the cover is a part you can replace: Gardenigloo USA sells a spare cover for $599. On a Domevora dome the polycarbonate panels carry the load themselves, so there is no frame across the view and no fabric to replace.

That difference shows up in three places. Height: the Gardenigloo is 2.18 m at the centre, the Round 3.5 m High is 3.0 m. Weight: about 43 kg for the V3 Pro against 180 kg, which is why a Gardenigloo moves easily and ours stays where you put it. And winter: Gardenigloo publishes a maximum snow load of 90 lbs (V2) or 200 lbs (V3 Pro) and asks owners to clear snow from the top, while a rigid shell is checked against the design snow load for the site.

Both need the same care in use. A clear enclosure collects heat in sun and condensation in cold, so plan shade, ventilation and heating either way; our winter heating guide shows how to size a heater for a clear dome.

Which to choose

When each one is the better fit.

Gardenigloo is likely the better fit if…

  • you want one garden igloo for under $1,500 delivered within the US or Canada;
  • you want to put it up in an afternoon without tools, and take it down again;
  • you want to move it around the garden or store it out of season;
  • you are a bar or restaurant adding several igloos for one winter season.

Domevora is likely the better fit if…

  • the dome should stay up all year as a room, not as a seasonal cover;
  • you want more head height at the same diameter (3.0 m against 2.18 m);
  • you need a larger size: rounds up to 6.0 m, or ovals up to 3.5 × 7.5 m for long tables;
  • you are buying for a restaurant or resort and want a 7-year material warranty on the shell.

Either way, check…

  • the snow and wind your site actually gets, against what the maker publishes;
  • how you will ventilate it on a sunny day and heat it on a cold evening;
  • what is in the price: delivery, duty, tax, anchoring and the base.

Questions buyers ask us

Is Domevora cheaper than Gardenigloo?

No, not on the listed price. A Gardenigloo V2 is $1,149 and a V3 Pro $1,499, while our nearest size, the Round 3.5 m High, starts at US$1,692 EX-WORKS before freight and duty. Our smallest model, the Round 2.1 m at US$1,094, seats two and is not a like-for-like alternative. What the extra buys is a rigid shell, 3.0 m of height and a 7-year material warranty.

Is a Gardenigloo rigid?

The frame is: PVC on the V2, aluminium on the V3 Pro. The skin is a soft transparent PVC cover stretched over it. A Domevora dome has no frame; the solid polycarbonate panels are the structure.

Can a garden igloo stay up all winter?

Gardenigloo says its igloo can be used all year, publishes a maximum snow load of 90 lbs (V2) or 200 lbs (V3 Pro), and advises clearing snow from the top. For a rigid Domevora dome, ask us for the design snow load and confirm it locally; see wind and snow.

What is a good Gardenigloo alternative for a restaurant?

If the igloos will stay out for more than one season, or you need tables for more than eight, look at a rigid dome. The Round 3.0 m seats 4–6 and the Round 4.0 m seats 8–10; prices and layouts are on restaurant igloos and outdoor dining domes.

How does Domevora compare with Hypedome?

Hypedome is closer to us in construction: it also uses solid polycarbonate, but sells at a delivered retail price. See Domevora vs Hypedome.
